Visiting enchanting Zhejiang engraves a lasting impression
By Anis BENHEDOUGA Journalist for Algerian Radio
I'm not the first, and certainly won't be the last, tourist to be thrilled by the enchanting Hangzhou, the capital city of Zhejiang province, and what it offers to visitors.
Several centuries before, one of the greatest explorers of all time from north Africa had a similar impression. Ibn Battuta had traveled more than three times the distance that Marcco Polo covered. He was appointed by the Sultan of Delhi in India as his Ambassador to King of China. As he arrived in 1345 in Hangzhou, he said it was one of the largest cities he had ever seen and noted its charm, describing that the city sat on a beautiful lake surrounded by gentle green hills.
Zhejiang province successfully fused tradition and modernity, and the city is a crossroad for meeting and exchange.
When I was walking in Hangzhou city with my colleagues in last October, during our visit organized by China-Africa Press Center, I told him that “I feel as if I'm in Europe” as I look at the modern buildings lining the streets. I don’t know why I had said this, though the city is completely different from Europe, maybe because subconsciously, we link modernity with European countries.
I had visited some European cities where they are modern buildings, but Hangzhou is stunningly beautiful. When we crossed a river and saw group of buildings aligned along it, I realized that it is not only about enjoying a beautiful architecture but this showed us, and other foreigners, China's prowess in construction.
Hangzhou is more than a modern city, it is a futuristic city. The futuristic dimension was clearly expressed in Intelligent E-valley and Dream Town. When we visited those places, we discovered that China is at the forefront in advanced technologies, such as artificial intelligence and smart cities.
The firms in Artificial Intelligence (AI) town, which sits in the heart of the city, expend huge resources to introduce intelligent technologies in many applications to improve the life of people and establish smart cities.
Those applications are expected to impact positively on the wellbeing of humanity and contributed to “building a community of common destiny" as President Xi Jinping often said.
Looking toward the future does not mean forgetting our past. Keeping traditions and protecting the patrimony of the nation is protecting the identity of its people.
This is what we saw when we visited the Orchid Pavilion Museum of Calligraphy, where we discovered the calligraphy of old Chinese characters and its history. We experienced how a group of people got inspiration and wrote poetry in ancient times at the foot of Lanzhu Mountain by setting on both sides of winding water and floated cups of wine along with it.
We visited the National Silk Museum. There, we discovered, through its galleries, the story of Chinese Silk and the Sericulture and Silk Craftsmanship in China. We experienced the cultural heritage collection of old clothes. This museum gives a detailed history of Silk in China since the old times.
The silk products were one of the most important products transported by caravans along Silk Road in the past. Thousand of years ago, traders came to China from different parts of the world to buy them, and Zhejiang is still as attractive as it was in the past.
In Yiwu, we visited an international trade city, a very huge mall, that if one spends only 2 minutes at a shop, the person will need two years to visit all the shops there.
The trade city parades variety of products from all over the world. I met some people who came from Arab countries to buy wares. I was surprised when I discovered other African products there.
Indeed, my trip to the historical, stunningly beautiful Zhejiang would be forever engraved in my memory.
